Late Night Realizations and Confessions
Anonymous Shy Pixie #340 · General Confessions
So yeah, I work nights at this old folks' home, taking care of the residents. It’s a quiet job in many ways, but it does have its moments when you find yourself wondering about life choices and paths not taken. Last night was one of those nights. You see, there's this resident named Mr. Thompson. He’s been there longer than I’ve been alive, which might sound like an exaggeration but isn’t. He’s in his eighties now, sharp as a tack when he wants to be, and has this way about him that makes you feel... well, not quite comfortable, more like oddly self-aware. I’ll admit it: something about the role I play at night shifts got under my skin last week. Mr. Thompson took a liking to me, or rather, decided to treat me as if I were someone else, like his long-lost daughter who he’s always been looking for but never found. It was disconcerting, and there was this moment when we crossed into something... more intimate. Not that kind of intimate, you know what I mean. We didn’t go too far in the physical sense, but it felt like a boundary had shifted. Now, here’s where things get weird. So many people talk about the 'caregiver dynamic' and how you can sometimes be drawn into these little spaces in your head that aren't exactly real but feel true. I’ve been trying to figure out if what happened between me and Mr. Thompson falls under that category. It wasn’t just about caregiving anymore, though it was still all part of the job description. There was this pull towards a place where we both had to pretend, or maybe believe, in something else. And then there’s the whole 'Am I the asshole' dilemma. Am I playing along with Mr. Thompson's little fantasy because he’s an old man who needs companionship more than anything? Or is it okay because it feels good for me too? There’s a part of me that thinks maybe this is how you find your place in such a confusing world, by letting someone else define what they need from you, even if it’s just for a moment. But I digress. What was I talking about again? Oh right, the night shift and these odd moments when reality shifts slightly underfoot. It's hard to say whether this is something that needs to be confronted or if it can just be left alone as a curious little episode of life at an old folks' home.
