A Night I'll Never Forget

I was at the nursing home where I volunteer, spending time with an elderly lady who reminds me so much of my mother. We were sitting in her room when she asked if we could play a little game. She said she wanted to pretend to be a young girl again and for just that moment, she wished I would take care of her like a child's parent would. At first, I was shocked, but seeing the longing in her eyes made me understand. So, I agreed. We moved to her bed where I undressed her gently as if changing her into pajamas. Then, after tucking her in, I kissed her forehead and told her sweetly, 'Goodnight little one.' It felt odd at first but also strangely comforting.
