...When I Broke the Rules...

Anonymous Sugar Sprite #460 · General Confessions

I'm a first-year law student, trying to keep up with all my readings and classes. At home, though, I've got this little dynamic going on with my partner, sometimes I’m the little one needing guidance, other times I step into the caregiver role. It's been a challenging semester for both of us emotionally and mentally...I just needed that extra push to get through everything... Yesterday was particularly rough. We had an agreement not to order takeout unless it was absolutely necessary because we're trying to save money, you know, adult things like rent and bills coming up. I mean, the idea is sound, right? But somehow, I just couldn't handle making dinner...and after a long day at school, all I wanted was something comforting... So around six last night, when I should have been cooking or planning my meals for tomorrow, I found myself reaching for my phone. I ordered pizza...I know, it’s not a big deal to most people, but in our little world, breaking the agreement felt like a huge betrayal...to myself as much as anyone else. My partner is supportive of both roles we take on, when I need them to push me or when I’m the one setting boundaries and being strict. But this time? It was different. My mistake wasn’t just about pizza; it felt like a symptom of everything weighing down on me lately... When they found out, my partner reminded me gently of our agreement...and I felt so small in that moment, not physically little, but emotionally tiny and ashamed. We had such a strong conversation afterward, hashing things out...I explained the stress building up and why I reached for comfort instead of following through with what we’d planned. We ended up talking it out until late into the night, unpacking my emotions, understanding where I was coming from while still acknowledging the rule wasn't broken lightly. It made me realize how much our little dynamic means to both of us...and how important communication and accountability are in maintaining that balance. It’s hard when you feel like letting yourself off the hook sometimes...but this time, instead of ignoring my guilt or brushing it aside, I let myself feel everything. And that ended up being a relief in itself, because we both agreed to move forward with renewed commitment and understanding. ...
