Navigating Boundaries as a Caregiver
Anonymous Candy Marshmallow #159 · General Confessions
I'm a first-year law student and I've been caring for my partner, Alex, who has some medical conditions requiring special attention. We never use terms like 'Daddy' or 'Mommy,' but the dynamic we share is one where I take on more of an authority figure role in his life to ensure he stays healthy and safe. Our arrangement started a couple of months ago when it became clear that Alex needed help managing his medications, appointments, and daily routines. We both agreed that this wasn't about age or childhood dynamics but rather a mutual decision as adults to navigate our current situation together effectively. There's an element of playfulness in how we handle these interactions too; he might give me playful resistance occasionally, which makes it all the more rewarding when I'm able to gently guide him back on track. Our relationship has grown closer and more intimate because of this dynamic, but it hasn't come without its challenges. Recently, there was an incident where Alex pushed his boundaries further than ever before, testing limits that we both agreed were non-negotiable for his health and well-being. It was a moment where I had to step in firmly, ensuring he understood the seriousness of what was at stake. Afterwards, there was a period of tension as we both processed how far Alex pushed things. However, after some open conversations, we reaffirmed our commitment to each other and the role that works best for us right now. I'm proud of the way this has strengthened our bond and allows me to be an even better caregiver to him. In essence, this dynamic is about mutual respect and understanding as two adults who are navigating unique challenges together in a consensual space without any pretense of nostalgia or regression to earlier life stages.
