The Unasked-for Life Lesson in Patience and Respect
Anonymous Peachy Pixie #860 · General Confessions
So here I am, writing this confession after a particularly draining week with my boy-toy (he's forty, but let's be honest, he acts like he needs a lot more hand-holding than someone his age should). We've been together for six years now, and while our relationship has its ups and downs, it’s mostly been about him needing guidance on everything from cooking to handling financial responsibilities. I know, I know, it sounds ridiculous when written down, but that's the reality of us. He calls me Mommy, and I play along because, well, let's face it, he needs someone in his life who isn't going to bail at the first sign of trouble. The kicker is, lately he’s been testing my patience like never before. It started with silly things, leaving dishes out for days or forgetting to pick up groceries even though I’d made a list and left it on the fridge with Post-It notes everywhere reminding him what we needed. But then it escalated into bigger issues, like missing our appointments together because he got lost driving (in the same city where I’ve lived my whole adult life) and losing important documents that required immediate action. Yesterday was a real low point. He came home late, looking disheveled and clearly upset about something at work. Instead of sitting down to talk like an adult would do, he just started sulking around the house, snapping at me when I tried to engage. It felt like no matter how hard I tried to help or reassure him, nothing I said made a difference. I finally had enough. We ended up having one of those long conversations that are more like lectures from me on personal responsibility and respect for others' time and effort. He agreed to seek therapy, both individually and possibly with me (though the idea of spending hours in a room talking about our issues makes my head hurt just thinking about it). I guess this confession is mostly just to let out some steam, because while I love him deeply, there are days when being someone's Mommy feels like way more than I bargained for. We'll see how things go from here; maybe he’ll step up and show me that the man who keeps asking for guidance can actually take it and grow from it.
