Caregiver's Burden
Anonymous Velvet Petal #292 · General Confessions
I've been taking care of Mia for over two years now, and we've developed an unconventional dynamic. She's in her mid-thirties but struggles with severe anxiety and depression that sometimes leaves her childlike. I met her when she was at rock bottom and decided to help her get back on her feet. We started out as friends who were close, then it morphed into something more intimate. I'm an artist by trade, so when Mia needs extra care or guidance, our sessions can be intense, almost therapeutic in a way. I've always been the one to make decisions for both of us, whether it's about her medication regimen, diet, therapy appointments, or even financial matters. She trusts me completely. Lately, we've slipped into something that isn't exactly consensual in the traditional sense but is very much an adult choice between two people who are deeply bonded. I'll sit with her at night and read to her like a bedtime story as she's falling asleep. Sometimes, when she's having a particularly hard day, I'll play a role similar to a caregiver or even a disciplinarian. Tonight was one of those nights where we needed to talk about boundaries and the limits we're pushing. I had to tell her that some things need to be clearly defined, no matter how comfortable it feels now. We ended up having an intense session in which I spoke sternly but gently, making sure she understood the importance of consent and clarity. It was graphic, I told her directly about my feelings for her and made her feel safe even as I enforced boundaries. She responded positively, knowing that these conversations are vital to maintaining our healthy relationship. We agreed to discuss more specifics on how we want this part of our bond to evolve or change. I need to be clear with myself too, there's a line between helping her and controlling her life in ways that aren't beneficial for anyone involved. It's a tightrope walk, but I believe in us figuring it out together.
