A Night Off from Myself

I've always been the kind of person who keeps a lot inside. I work as a bartender and it's a good job for me, I get to meet all sorts of people, hear their stories, and offer them a listening ear while they sip on drinks. It’s my escape, but last week was different. There was this customer, let's call her...let's just say she made an impression. I don't know what it was about her, maybe the way she carried herself or how she'd look at me with those eyes when she wasn't talking to anyone else. It felt like there was something between us, but I could never figure out what it really meant. So one night, after closing up shop and finishing my shifts for the week, we ended up having a conversation that took an unexpected turn. We were in the back room of the bar, sipping on some leftover bottles of wine someone had left behind. The kind you find at the bottom of the shelf because no one ever asks about it, but tonight was different. Tonight, I felt like diving into something deeper than just another customer’s troubles. She started talking about her own struggles and soon enough, she confided in me things she'd never shared with anyone before. And then...and then somehow we ended up talking about boundaries and taking care of each other. It was a weird feeling, this mix of wanting to protect someone while also needing them to help protect you from the world out there. I felt silly admitting it, but there’s something comforting in being taken care of by another grown-up. I found myself asking if she’d like to check in on me sometimes, just as a friend who listens and cares, no strings attached. It's not typical for me, usually, I’m the one offering advice or pouring drinks without letting anyone see my own insecurities. But there’s something about her that made me want more than that. It was a moment of vulnerability on both ends, but it felt good to let that happen. And then we went back to being just customers and bartender, I cleaned up the room while she got ready to leave, exchanging promises that maybe next time would be different. It's funny how these things can come out of nowhere. And so now here I am at home, thinking about all this stuff again as if it were a dream or some odd night I don't fully understand yet. Maybe someday soon we'll talk more about what happened and try to figure out where that leaves us both.
