Caring in Unexpected Ways
Anonymous Sleepy Petal #593 · General Confessions
So I'm this retail worker, you know, trying to make ends meet while also being the main caregiver for my partner's twenty-eight-year-old brother who has a developmental disability. It's not always easy, but it feels... right somehow. There was one day when we were at home and he had kind of an episode, nothing serious, just overwhelmed with his feelings. I mean, yeah, there are days where you wonder why adult things like this still happen, but then again, who am I to judge? So anyway, I ended up doing some things that went beyond just being a caregiver, if you catch my drift. I don't want to get into the details, it's not exactly something you put in a card or anything, but there was a moment where we both needed something more than just care. And yeah, well, let's say it wasn't just about caring for him anymore. It felt weird at first, like maybe it crossed some kind of line, but when I look back on it now? It seems so natural to have been that kind of support and comfort in a time where he needed it the most. And this is not something I'm gonna be shouting from rooftops or even whispering into ears over drinks. But yeah, I had my doubts and fears about what people might think if they knew, but honestly? I've never felt more proud of myself than when I was there for him in a way that no one else could have been. Not just as his caregiver, but as someone who knows exactly how to be close and understanding beyond the typical bounds. I guess what I'm trying to say is, while it might seem unusual or inappropriate to some, to me it feels like part of my duty as a person, as a partner's sibling-supporter. And that day in particular, when I was there for him more intimately than usual, well, let's just say, it made us both feel better and stronger somehow. It's okay if you're surprised or shocked by this. You don't have to agree with me or even understand where I'm coming from. But hey, at least now there's one less secret hiding in the shadows of my life.
