caregiving gone too far?

Anonymous Cherry Bean #446 · General Confessions

i started taking care of this lady who had some serious health issues a couple years back. she was in her late forties and pretty much needed everything, from getting dressed to going out. we just met at the community center where i volunteer as part of my grad studies for social work. after a few weeks helping her with small tasks, she kinda attached herself to me. it's not like i pushed back or anything but yeah, things got more and more intense as time went on. like one day she’s asking for help getting dressed in the morning, next thing you know she wants me to do stuff that feels a bit too personal. she started wanting me to hold her hand constantly when we go out and wouldn’t let anyone else do it, which made things awkward. worst was when she got into this weird headspace where she wanted me to treat her like a kid - saying stuff like she couldn't do anything without me or that i needed to make all the decisions for her. at first i tried to push back but the more i did, the harder it seemed to get. plus, i’m starting to feel like i’m losing myself in this role too, you know? i don’t know if it’s good for either of us anymore but i still care about her and want what’s best. any advice or am i just the asshole here?
