Confession of a Retail Caregiver

Anonymous Sugar Peach #459 · General Confessions

I've been working in retail for five years now and I'm 25. It's a high-stress job with long hours, but it pays the bills. Recently, I started an unusual arrangement with my boyfriend, Jack, who is also 26. He needed someone to help him manage his anxiety and depression; he felt like he was drowning in a sea of negative thoughts. So, we decided that for our relationship to work, I would take on this role as a caregiver in the DDLG sense. We didn't use any specific labels for it because I'm not into being called 'Daddy' or anything formal like that. It's just me being there for him and looking out for his mental health. Jack isn't the only one who has had struggles, but my coping mechanisms are different from his, mine revolve around structure and routine. He thrives on attention and care during tough times, which I'm happy to provide. So now, we have a system where I set rules for him to follow: no alcohol before dinner, no going out late unless he checks in with me first, etc. At the same time, it's not just about discipline, I make sure to give him affection and validation when he does well. This arrangement has been great for both of us, or so we think. Jack seems more stable these days, and I feel a sense of satisfaction knowing that my efforts are making a positive impact on his life. But here's where it gets tricky: sometimes, after a long day at work managing other people's stress, coming home to manage Jack’s feels like... too much. It sounds selfish, but it's exhausting. I'm wondering if what I'm doing is healthy for both of us. Is it okay to have these moments where you feel burnt out? Should I talk about this with him more openly and find a way to balance my caregiving role without letting it consume me entirely? Your thoughts would mean the world to me.
