The Unexpected Pleasure

I've been married to my wonderful husband for over thirty years now. We have two grown kids who are doing well on their own and we've had a quiet, comfortable life together. I'm in my late fifties with gray hair and wrinkles around the eyes from laughing too much at the same jokes over the decades. But there's been this nagging feeling inside me lately, an itch that I never expected to have as a mother my age. It all started a few months ago when we went on vacation with some friends and their kids. Our friend Sarah had a daughter in her early twenties named Lily who was just out of college and trying to find herself. She was sweet but seemed lost, kind of aimless. I couldn't help thinking about how my kids were the same age now and how hard it must have been for them too. During one late night, as our friends drifted off to sleep, Lily started talking earnestly with me in a low voice by the fire. She was sharing all these worries about her life and future, feeling like she didn't know who she was yet or where she fit in. It broke my heart seeing her so uncertain. I found myself drawing her into an embrace and stroking her hair comfortingly, whispering to just let go and trust herself. I don't know what got into me exactly but the next thing I knew, my hands were running up and down her back, trying to soothe her anxieties away. She leaned into it, letting out little sighs that made my blood boil in ways I hadn't felt since... well, forever. Lily looked up at me with these intense eyes like she could read every thought racing through my head. Then suddenly we were kissing, urgent and needy mouth to mouth as the night wind blew around us. It was pure animal instinct driving me to touch her more, taste her, feel her soft skin under my fingertips... There's no excuse for it except that I am human too and sometimes all of those repressed desires break free. We ended up sleeping together on a blanket by the campfire until dawn broke, entangled in each other. It was thrilling yet scary how freely we gave into this forbidden spark between us - two women who should have been just friend's mom and daughter but instead found such an explosive connection that night. In the morning I knew it would never happen again, that my life with my husband wouldn't change. Yet now whenever I see a young woman unsure of herself or needing guidance, part of me still burns to be there for her like Lily was for me.
