Forgot My Place for a Second

So here's this weird little thing that happened recently. I'm in my early 30s and have been exploring DDLG dynamics for the past few years, both as a little and occasionally stepping into a more caregiving role with different partners. It's fun to explore these roles, but it's also super important to keep them grounded and consensual. Anyway, last week we were planning this big weekend of cozy indoor activities, reading under blankets, cooking new recipes together, the whole deal. My partner had asked me specifically not to drink any caffeine past noon because they have a sensitive tummy and I agreed. So there I was mid-morning on Saturday, in my little space (which is just a corner with some of my stuffed animals and childhood trinkets), feeling all snug and warm from the day's activities so far, crafting, baking, cuddling, and suddenly I was craving coffee. Like, really wanting it. Not because there's anything wrong with my caffeine intake habits or something dramatic like that. It’s just that sometimes you get a hankering for your morning routine drink at odd hours. So here comes the weird part: As much as I value this dynamic and respect our rules (because honestly, they help us stay connected in so many ways), there was this tiny moment where I thought to myself, 'What's the harm? It’s just a cup of coffee.' I could almost feel my brain slipping into some kind of childhood mode for a second. As if it didn't matter because, well, when you're little, everything feels like an adventure, right? But then reality hit me: I'm 32 years old and this is not the time to be making up rules as I go along. So I skipped the coffee that day and stuck to herbal tea instead. The rest of the weekend went off without a hitch. We laughed about it later, but honestly, there's something comforting about sticking to the plan we've set out for ourselves. It made me reflect on how sometimes even in these playful dynamics, boundaries are key, and respecting them can be its own kind of sweet reward.
