The Last Student

Anonymous Cuddly Marshmallow #294 · General Confessions

I met her when she was eighteen and I was fifty-two. She came to me as a student in one of my literature classes at the university. From day one, there was something about her that drew me in - an intensity, a brightness that shone through even the grungy exterior of her rebellious self-image. We started meeting outside of class - coffee dates, book club meetings, and eventually just sitting together on campus benches, talking for hours about anything and everything. She was smart, funny, and incredibly passionate. It wasn't long before my feelings shifted from mentorship to something deeper. I knew it was wrong. I did. But she didn't see it the same way I did. To her, there was nothing forbidden about our connection. And so we let ourselves fall into a pattern of secret meetings, late-night texts filled with shared desires and whispered promises, until one day it all came crashing down around us. The moment I crossed that line from teacher to lover, everything changed. The university found out - how they did is still unclear to me today. All I know is that one morning an email arrived in my inbox informing me of a formal investigation into inappropriate behavior with a student. My career was destroyed overnight; her life wasn't much better off either. Looking back now, six months later, all the joy we found in each other feels tainted by this mess. What's left is just regret - for myself, mostly, but also for the way it ended up hurting someone so innocent and bright like her. I tried to stay away afterward, but seeing her face everywhere reminds me of what was once beautiful between us. So here I am confessing anonymously, not because I need forgiveness or even understanding, but simply because carrying this around inside eats at my soul day by day.
