...Caught Up In A Role That Was Never Mine To Play...

I am a professor in my 50s, with decades of experience guiding young minds through the complexities of academic life. I've always prided myself on being a mentor and caregiver to those under me, providing support and encouragement whenever they needed it most. But one day, something happened that made me question everything about myself... It was late last year when Sarah joined my class. She was brilliant, ambitious, but also struggled with confidence issues. We began meeting regularly outside of our scheduled hours for additional guidance. Over time, these sessions became more intimate... not in a romantic way, but in the sense that I started to take on a role far beyond what I signed up for... I found myself comforting her anxieties and helping her navigate challenges well into adulthood as if she were still an immature child needing someone's hand to hold. It was clear we had crossed some undefined line, yet neither of us seemed able to step back from it... Her dependence on me deepened over months, culminating in a moment where the boundaries I set for myself blurred so entirely... One evening after class, she approached me with tears in her eyes, saying that my guidance meant everything to her. That's when she suddenly fell into my arms as if seeking protection from some imagined threat of hers alone... And then came the words that shattered all rational thought, I must have looked after her like a father would, a guardian who would always be there... I was utterly unprepared for those words or how much they echoed something buried deep within me. I had long since let go of any such attachments from my own youth... Yet here I was, suddenly confronted with an adult student's emotional dependency and the realization that perhaps my guidance wasn't entirely professional after all... We talked it out at length later on, both agreeing to take a step back and reassess what we had. There were no hard feelings between us but there is something about that moment that still hangs in my mind like an open question... What if I hadn’t pushed her away? Would things have become something more than they ever should have been? Now, when new students come to me for guidance, I find myself wary of becoming too emotionally entangled again. But there's a part of me that wonders what might happen if I allowed the lines to blur just once more...
