Broke a Promise to Myself

I was supposed to run five miles this morning but I slept in. It's like that every day, isn't it? The alarm goes off and then my mind starts racing. 'Maybe just ten more minutes,' or 'That meeting will only take an hour.' Before I know it, the sun is high in the sky and there are no miles logged on my fitness tracker. And here I am again, thinking about how much easier life would be if I could stick to my plans. I've been trying really hard to get into better shape. The workouts aren't just about looking good, they're a way for me to feel like I'm still in control of something when everything else feels chaotic. My husband is overseas, and all this alone time can be tough. It’s easy to lose track. Today was supposed to be different though. I set an extra early alarm and made coffee. The plan was to go outside as soon as it was light enough to see, no excuses allowed. But something happened inside my head that morning. Maybe it was the soft, cool breeze or just a lack of motivation deep down, but when I hit snooze for the third time, there wasn’t any resistance in me anymore. When I finally did get up and look at the day ahead, I felt this overwhelming guilt and disappointment with myself. Not only had I broken my personal rule about running in the morning, but now it's going to be harder to fit everything else into the day because of that decision. And there’s this lingering feeling, like maybe I’m just not cut out for all of this adult responsibility after all. It was a small thing, one missed run isn't the end of anything important. But still, in my head, it feels huge. I've got to figure out how to stop letting these little things slip through my fingers and start taking better care of myself.
