A Moment of Weakness at Work
Anonymous Fuzzy Star #643 · General Confessions
I’ve always been the responsible one, the caretaker in every relationship. I’ve never seen myself as someone who needs to be cared for or disciplined, but there’s this bartender gig where it feels like a role-reversal. It started off innocent enough; my boss is older and has a kind of authority that pulls me in despite the fact that we both know he’s just my superior at work. One day, I was supposed to clock out early for a doctor's appointment but got caught up chatting with some regulars who always come by. I felt bad about it because I’d promised myself and everyone else I’d be there for them on this particular night. But the longer we talked, the harder it became to leave, especially when they started teasing me about being such an obedient employee. I didn’t end up leaving until one of them mentioned how late it was and suggested a drink just to relax after all that work. I felt guilty, not because I missed my appointment but because I broke the unspoken rule of respect for boundaries that we have in our dynamic with each other. It’s not like my boss is some strict disciplinarian; he's more understanding than anything else. But something about disappointing him and myself felt heavy. The next day, I approached him about it with a genuine apology. He listened without judgment and reminded me to prioritize self-care and setting personal boundaries, even at work. It was a humbling experience, but one that made me realize how much I value these small gestures of accountability and affection in my life.
