Forgot About The Rule On My Own Birthday Cake Night

Okay, so here’s the thing. I’ve been a professor for what feels like an eternity but is really just two decades or thereabouts. This year, my 45-year-old self decided to give myself a little birthday treat in the form of some DDLG fun, let's call it a celebration of midlife and all its complicated joys. My partner agreed to take on a dominant role for the evening, which sounds like an interesting way to spend your day off if you ask me. We established some rules before we started our little game, the idea being that I get to be a bit more carefree while he takes charge. One of these rules was about my birthday cake night. Since it’s not every year I turn another year older, and given the current state of everything else, having something special planned for myself didn’t seem like too much. So here we are, sitting down with candles in a homemade chocolate cake, watching a funny movie together as part of my little celebration. It was all going well until about 20 minutes into the film when my phone rang, a friend checking up on me since it’s my birthday week. Normally, I’d have ignored such calls to maintain this fantasy and keep to the rules, but this time I took it. Now, it’s one thing to pick up a call while breaking character; another is talking about your day-to-day concerns like traffic or grocery shopping lists. But that’s exactly what I did, like the rule didn’t exist in my head anymore because cake and candles had apparently turned off my brain. Oops. Later, we talked it out over tea (without any cakes involved). It wasn't a big deal, but it was a reminder to stay present and follow through with our agreed-upon boundaries even when life feels like it’s pulling you in all sorts of directions at once. Still laughing about it now, birthday cake night turned into a lesson on discipline after all.
