The Art of Classroom Discipline (18+ Confession)

I've always been a strict teacher, one who believes in the importance of discipline as much as education. I never thought my approach would cross into something beyond professional boundaries until last year when I began an unconventional method with one of my students, Jane. She's in her twenties and has been struggling academically for some time now, despite being quite intelligent and creative. Jane often seemed disengaged during class discussions and had a difficult time focusing on assignments. Concerned about her performance and well-being, I decided to approach the issue by offering additional one-on-one sessions outside of regular class hours. Initially, these meetings were purely academic, aimed at helping Jane improve her grades and regain confidence in herself. Over several weeks, we established a routine where we would meet twice weekly after school. The conversations often strayed from just academics to personal topics and ambitions. As I began to understand more about Jane's life outside of school, her struggles with independence and self-discipline, I realized that my role extended beyond being merely her teacher. One evening, during a particularly open conversation, it became clear she respected me deeply but struggled with adult responsibilities in ways similar to younger individuals might. I proposed an arrangement where I would serve as a figure of authority in her life, helping guide and discipline her much like a parent would. Surprised yet intrigued, Jane agreed. Our sessions then evolved into structured meetings involving exercises designed to build self-control and responsibility. I enforced rules that felt reminiscent of parental guidance, from curfews to chores, all aimed at cultivating better habits and maturity in her daily life. We discussed goals for personal development rather than merely academic success. While this setup was unconventional and certainly pushed boundaries of our professional relationship, both Jane and I found it incredibly beneficial. Her grades improved dramatically, she became more engaged and confident, and we developed a unique bond that neither of us could have anticipated or planned for in any other context. This confession is to state my involvement clearly, proudly acknowledging the unconventional yet fruitful path we chose together, a blend of teaching, mentoring, and something much deeper. It's not typical, but it worked.
