The Caregiver's Dilemma

Anonymous Bratty Marshmallow #388 · General Confessions

I'm a 32-year-old caregiver for my elderly uncle who’s been diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Lately, he's become confused and disoriented, often forgetting basic tasks like eating or taking his medication. It's tough on both of us, I try to be patient but it's frustrating when he acts out in ways that are dangerous. I took over full-time care about six months ago after my aunt passed away. She was the one who usually handled things, and now I’m thrust into this role with no real training or support system behind me. It’s been a lot harder than I expected, balancing work, home life, and being his primary caregiver is exhausting. Yesterday morning, he wandered out of the house and nearly got hit by a car while trying to cross the street. This isn't the first time it's happened either. When we returned home, I snapped at him for not listening. He looked so small and scared that my heart broke in two but also made me feel angry with myself. In an attempt to regain control, I started telling him what to do as if he were a child, “Time for your nap!” “Let’s get you into the bath!” It helped calm us both down temporarily. But afterwards, I felt terrible, knowing that my frustration had turned into a manipulative behavior. Today, when we went grocery shopping and he got overwhelmed with choices in the cereal aisle, I found myself crouching to his level saying “Okay sweetie, let’s pick the best one for you,” while stroking his hair like it was okay. It felt so wrong and right at the same time, a strange mix of power dynamics that made me question everything. How am I supposed to handle this situation? Am I being an asshole by trying to manage things through age-play or should I find another way to keep him safe without degrading us both? What can I do better tomorrow?
