Mommy's Discipline Routine

Anonymous Playful Bean #239 · General Confessions

I've been feeling pretty drained this week at work and it's not just me. My little one, a professional adult but in her twenties, has also been stressed out over some personal stuff too. We're both tired of putting up a front for everyone else and decided to lean into our DDLG relationship more than usual during these rough times. We started off the week with a strict bedtime routine for her, no later than 10 PM without fail, including weekend nights. I've made sure she follows through on it despite her whining about needing an extra hour or two late at night. It's hard sometimes, but seeing her well-rested face in the morning makes it worth it. Her behavior has also been a little rebellious lately. She doesn't like being told what to do and tends to push back against boundaries I set for us. To address this, I've initiated a system of rewards for compliance and consequences for defiance. One particular consequence involves her kneeling in the corner with her hands behind her head whenever she misbehaves, which has happened more often than usual lately. Yesterday was particularly rough. She refused to take her medication on time because it's unpleasant, despite being an essential part of her health regimen we agreed upon. I stepped in and made her take a timeout until she realized the importance of following our rules. It wasn't pretty, there were tears involved, but after that, she understood better. Tonight, as per usual, I have dinner ready for us early since I know how much work can drain the energy from both of us. Afterwards, I plan to engage in a more intensive discipline session because her defiance is only getting worse and it's becoming clear this week isn't just going to end without stronger measures being taken. I feel like these strict routines are helping, but there's something about my little one's resistance lately that worries me. It's a fine line between pushing too hard and not enough, so I'm seeking feedback from others who might be in similar situations or have insights on how to better handle rebellious behavior within the context of our dynamic. What do you think, am I doing the right thing by being strict now or should I try something different?
