...A Recent Realization...

I've been working as a nurse for nearly ten years now. My job is demanding, but it's also rewarding in its own way. It's not just about the patients; sometimes, it's about connecting with them on a level that goes beyond medical care. Recently, though... I found myself questioning some of my personal boundaries and how they intersect with my professional life. It started when I was caring for a patient who needed extensive emotional support as well as physical care. She was in her late twenties, just starting to recover from a long-term illness that had left her feeling very fragile both physically and mentally. We developed quite a bond over the weeks she spent at the hospital... more than I think we should have, but something about her vulnerability drew me in. She would often talk about how safe she felt when I was around, she even said things like 'you make me feel so much better' or 'I don't worry when you're here'. It wasn't just platonic comfort; there were... underlying implications. She'd look at me with this sort of adoration that made my stomach twist and heart race. But, I was careful to keep it professional... But then one day, after a particularly hard week for her, she started speaking in ways that felt like a plea. She mentioned wanting someone to protect her from the world, to shield her from all the bad things out there... It felt so intimate and strange, yet also oddly familiar in a way I couldn't quite place. Since then, I've found myself thinking about this dynamic a lot more than before, about what it means for me personally. Is it something that stems from my nurturing nature as a nurse? Or is there an unspoken desire beneath the surface... one involving dominance and care? I'm not sure if others have experienced anything like this or if I am being overly paranoid about crossing lines. Does seeking this sort of emotional closeness with someone in need go beyond normal caregiving, even when you don't act on it? Am I overthinking something that's perfectly fine within the realm of consensual adult relationships? Any advice would be appreciated...
