...When I Broke My Own Rules...
Anonymous Snuggly Star #969 · General Confessions
I've always prided myself on being a strict caregiver. As someone in my forties, with years of experience as a professor and mentor behind me, I set up very clear guidelines for our arrangement, rules that we both agreed upon from the start. But recently, there's been this nagging feeling inside me, like I'm letting something slip through my fingers. We've had a solid routine since we started this dynamic about a year ago. My...caregiver duties are never just about the physical or emotional support; it's also about discipline and guidance. One rule that has always been non-negotiable is keeping the living space spotless, something we both agreed would symbolize our commitment to each other and our bond. But last weekend, I made a mistake. The weekend was hectic, full of grading papers until late at night, then waking up early for my online classes. By Sunday evening, when I returned from a brief walk around the park, exhaustion hit me hard. In that moment of weakness, instead of tackling the messy living room and kitchen, both in desperate need of attention, I chose to take a long bath. I rationalized it at first; maybe we could hire someone to help out once a week? Or perhaps just ignore it this one time without consequences...but deep down, I knew better. That rule was not meant for others, it was personal, about respect and responsibility. By letting the space get cluttered, even if only temporarily, I felt like I let myself down. The following days were a mix of shame and guilt. Every glance at that messy room brought back memories of us setting those rules together, how important they are to our dynamic. But instead of acting on my guilt, another day passed without addressing the mess... And now here I am...writing this confession. A reminder to myself more than anyone else: sometimes being a caregiver means facing your own flaws and weaknesses, too.
