Why Did I Do That?

Working at a retail store can be stressful and sometimes overwhelming. Yesterday was one of those days when everything felt like it was going wrong. Part of my job involves managing inventory, which means keeping track of stock levels and making sure everything is in its place. There’s an unwritten rule about not eating or drinking anything in the storage room because we need to keep it clean for health reasons. I know this rule well but yesterday, with my nerves frazzled from a day full of difficult customers and shortages on popular items, I made a mistake. I was checking stock levels late into the evening when a snack craving hit me out of nowhere. My eyes landed on a package of energy bars that we had in storage for staff use only but were often overlooked due to their unassuming packaging. The idea of breaking company policy crossed my mind, but I told myself it was just one bar and no harm done. As soon as the bar was out of its wrapper, guilt washed over me. I knew better. This wasn't about physical hunger or needing an energy boost; this was a moment of weakness mixed with a sense of defiance against the monotony and rules that often feel suffocating when things get hectic. Now, reflecting on it, I’m left wondering if my little rebellion was really worth it. It’s such a small thing in the grand scheme of things, but the lingering guilt feels like a weight pressing down on me.
