The Night I Broke His Heart
Anonymous Whispering Duckling #147 · General Confessions
I started working as a bartender at a local bar about six months ago. The place is small and cozy with regulars who come in every day, but there’s one customer who has always stood out to me, Alex, an older man in his forties who comes in almost every night. We hit it off immediately; he was a retired teacher and had plenty of interesting stories about life beyond the classroom. Over time, we developed a routine where I would serve him drinks and he’d regale me with tales from his past. He seemed to take comfort in my presence and our chats often turned personal as the night went on. One evening, after several rounds, Alex opened up about feeling lost since retiring. His wife passed away five years ago, leaving him adrift in a world that had suddenly shrunk. That’s when things changed between us. I felt sorry for him and wanted to help however I could. We began experimenting with different roles during our sessions, sometimes he would take on the role of an authority figure, and other times I’d act as his little girl. Neither of these dynamics were sexual in nature; it was purely about providing emotional support. One night, after a particularly heavy session where Alex had been very hands-on with me in a non-sexual way, we both felt more vulnerable than usual. In that moment, I crossed the line and kissed him. It was tender and sweet, but also inappropriate given our dynamic and what he’d shared about his past relationship. The next day at work, there was an awkward silence between us. He avoided eye contact and it was clear something had shifted. The intimacy we once shared now felt suffocating rather than comforting. I knew deep down that while my intentions were good, they came with a risk of hurting him in ways he wasn’t ready to face. Since then, things have never quite been the same between us. I still serve him drinks and listen to his stories, but the connection isn’t there anymore. Sometimes I wonder if it ever truly was just one-sided on my part or whether we both misunderstood where this all was headed from the start.
