A Weight Off My Shoulders

Anonymous Sugar Cupcake #400 · General Confessions

I've been taking care of my partner, who calls me 'Care', as their primary caregiver. It's a role I embraced wholeheartedly when they needed help after an accident left them with chronic pain and mobility issues. We're both in our twenties, but the demands on me can feel like looking after someone much younger, not because of age, but due to the level of care required. Nights are long, helping them navigate tasks most people take for granted, and it's draining. I worry that my own life is being overshadowed by theirs, and sometimes I wonder if there’s room for 'me' in this equation anymore. Tonight, as we settled into bed after another day filled with medication schedules and physical therapy, I confessed to them about feeling lost. They looked at me with those wide eyes, so full of gratitude but also a hint of guilt, and just held my hand without saying a word. It's a complex dynamic, and while being there for them is important, it’s tough not to feel like the world keeps spinning outside our little bubble.
