Conflicted Mommy Heartache

Anonymous Fuzzy Plum #352 · General Confessions

I’ve been playing the role of a mommy in my adult lifestyle for about two years now. I started after going through some major personal growth and realizing how much nurturing I needed in my life. It was a big change, but it felt incredibly right. The dynamic with my partner, let’s call him Alex, is that he plays the little boy role, which has really helped both of us navigate our emotional landscapes in ways traditional relationships couldn’t. We’ve had some rocky moments, especially when we started, and it took a lot of communication and patience to get to where we are today. The most challenging part for me is balancing this intimate play with the reality that Alex needs support in many aspects of his life, just like any young adult might. It’s not always easy because I know there's a line between playing a role and being overly involved or enabling. The recent issue that’s got me really torn happened last week when Alex ran into some financial trouble and asked for help with rent. He had already missed payments due to unexpected medical expenses, which hit us both hard emotionally. My instinct as his 'mommy' was to step in right away and take care of it without question. But part of me worries that doing so might not be the best thing for him long-term; I want him to feel capable and confident about handling his finances. So here’s my dilemma: how do I continue supporting Alex as both a partner and a mommy figure, while also encouraging independence? Is it healthy for me to provide financial support in this context, or should we set clearer boundaries around what the dynamic entails? Or is it even possible to strike that balance? I would love some insights from others who might have faced similar situations. Are my feelings normal, or am I complicating things unnecessarily?
