Pointless Discipline?

Tonight was another one of those evenings where I found myself laying down the law to my submissive. She spilled water on the floor and instead of apologizing like usual, she just smirked at me. Took her over my knee for a quick swat session and told her to clean up properly next time. Am I being too lenient or is this just how it goes sometimes? Comments appreciated.
