A Caregiver's Burden

Anonymous Midnight Bean #670 · General Confessions

I've always considered myself the caregiver type. My friends and colleagues often look to me for guidance and support, but lately, it feels like more of a weight than an honor. Recently, I found myself in an unusual situation where a younger adult confided in me about their struggles with addiction. As someone who has struggled with my own demons in the past, I felt compelled to help her in any way possible. We began spending time together, and things evolved beyond just mentoring. There was something comforting in knowing she could rely on me, and vice versa. Yet, it left a bittersweet taste in my mouth. The emotional burden of being both a provider and a support system is draining. I never intended to be anyone's savior, but here we are. It feels like the sadness from her struggles has somehow seeped into my life too.
