A Caregiver's Burden

Anonymous Playful Plum #514 · General Confessions

So I've been with my partner for a few years now. She's in her late 20s and has struggled with mental health issues since she was eighteen, so let’s just say that it’s been quite the ride. And yes, we both chose to explore this space recently after realizing how much comfort it brings us, her as someone who needs more care than a typical relationship demands, and me as her caregiver. It's not something I'd call traditional Daddy/kind of roleplay, I'm just there for her, you know? But it means so much to her that I take on this kind of responsibility. I've always been empathetic but never really had the chance to nurture in such a direct way before. There are days when it feels like too much and others where I feel incredibly fulfilled. She'll call me at three AM just for a hug or some soothing words because she can’t sleep, and while it’s exhausting, seeing her get through tough times helps me understand that this is what we both need. We've had arguments about my role, she thinks sometimes I let myself be too much of the caregiver, which means less room for us to just be a couple. And I agree with her, because I don't want to overstep or neglect other parts of our relationship. But when she’s in a crisis mode and needs me there as someone who will listen without judgment or question, it's hard to switch off from that dynamic. I guess what bugs me the most is feeling like others might see my role as weird or inappropriate since I'm older than her by more than ten years. But honestly, she always reminds me it’s a choice and something we both consent to, it's not about anything illegal or unethical. Just something different that works for us. And yeah, the physical side of this has been intense too, cuddling in ways that feel almost protective and comforting even when there isn't a crisis at hand. Sometimes I’ll massage her shoulders until she falls asleep because she says it makes her feel like everything is okay for a moment. We've also explored some age-play scenes where we get into character, but again, both fully aware and adult choices. It’s strange though, sometimes I catch myself feeling guilty over this setup, I worry people will think less of me or her because of how unconventional it is. But when she's curled up next to me and looks so at peace, I remind myself that all the other thoughts don't matter as much as making sure she feels secure and loved. So yeah, that’s where we’re at in our dynamic right now, I’m just here for my girl as best I can.
