My Week as a Little Boy in the Office...
Anonymous Sugar Marshmallow #550 · General Confessions
I'm thirty-five, a Mommy to my own little boy who I only let out at home. This week has been one of those frustrating weeks where everything feels monotonous and dull, deadlines aren't motivating, and my usual escape routes feel empty... So last night, while having our nightly call with each other before bed, he suggested something surprising: why don't we pretend like this is a long weekend at his place? And that would mean I'd be him for the whole week in the office. I thought about it as I got ready for work today... What if it was just one day? Just to shake things up. I could be 'late' and ask him to pick out my clothes and pack lunch. He was so excited on the call that I didn't tell him no... The transition began at home, dressing in his favorite shirt, putting on those socks with little cars... It felt weird, but also oddly comforting. The office had a mix of reactions, colleagues looking confused or amused when they saw me wearing those shoes or carrying around my lunch box instead of the briefcase I usually use... And then, something strange happened: even though I was playing at being his age in public... I started getting things done better. There's this energy that comes from pretending to be a kid again, asking for help without feeling silly, taking short breaks just because it feels like you should... I haven't been thinking as much about work's usual stress or my life outside of him and our playtime. It's... nice? Is that what I'm feeling? Confusion mixed with this calmness... But there's also guilt, the office is not a place for this, even if everyone treats me normally now. Still, it's been easier to focus, easier to laugh at small stuff and find joy in little things. So... am I just trying to escape reality? Or could something like this help in ways I'm still figuring out? Maybe I'll figure it out when the weekend comes around, but until then, my little boy is living on in me during every workday. And I have no idea if that's a good thing or not...
