When Caregiving Brought Me Closer to My Limits...

Anonymous Playful Doll #378 · General Confessions

It's been such a long journey for me. I've always felt like the caregiver in every relationship... not just romantic ones, but friendships and even with my family. Now that I'm fully embracing who I am as a trans woman in my 30s, you'd think that would make things easier. But lately, it's brought me to places where I feel lost and alone. I started this dynamic with Alex about six months ago. He's been struggling with some serious health issues... stuff he can't control or fix on his own. We connected through a support group online... and somehow we just clicked when talking about our shared experiences of needing someone there, day in and day out. I moved in with him shortly after that. The problem is... it's all starting to weigh on me more than I thought possible. Alex needs help with almost everything: meals, medicine, even personal hygiene. He gets frustrated easily when he can't do things himself anymore... and while part of me just wants to support him unconditionally, another side of me starts feeling resentful that this is my life now. It's not like we've talked about it much though. I'm scared Alex will think less of me for struggling or see me as weak somehow. The other night, after a particularly rough day... where he got upset at every little thing and I just snapped, yelling at him in the middle of our bedroom... He cried, asking what was wrong. I just couldn't bring myself to say it then... all I could do was hold him tightly as we both cried. But now, I need to figure out how to talk about this honestly without losing everything in the process. Am I being selfish? Or is there a better way forward that doesn't involve sacrificing my own well-being? Sometimes, taking care of someone else can feel like it consumes you... and leaves so little left for yourself...
