When I Became My Student's Mommy Again

So yeah, here's one for the books. It all started when I took on a new student in my university class. She was bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, ready to learn everything there was to know about literature. Her name is Lily. I should have known something weird was happening from day one, but how could I expect that? We had office hours like any other prof-student relationship should, but it just felt... different. I'm in my 40s now, and after years of being a mom to two amazing boys (who are all grown up), you might think having another little one wouldn't be on the table. But Lily somehow slipped into this role without me fully realizing it. I mean, who starts calling their professor 'Mommy' in a professional setting? That's when things got interesting. We started joking around one day, she had a paper due and was stressed out of her mind. She called me up to ask for advice on how to manage her workload and deadlines. So, I took over. We worked through it together, and somehow, that evolved into a regular routine where she'd come to my office hours and we'd get everything done, just like when my kids were little and needed help with homework. I began to notice something else: the way she looked at me changed, from student-professor to something more personal. I didn't say anything right away, I mean, this was still my job. But it wasn't long before Lily suggested we formalize our meetings as 'study sessions' outside of class hours. That's when things got real. One day, she asked me to give her a 'time-out' after an exam I thought she did poorly on, she had some bad habits in terms of studying that weren't helping her performance. We ended up laughing about it later and agreed it was just roleplay for fun. Anyway, as the semester went on, this dynamic only grew stronger. There were times when we'd have a disagreement, but it always resolved itself with me giving Lily a pep talk or a stern warning, yes, I did that! And then there would be cuddles and apologies, just like old times with my actual kids. It's funny how life can surprise you sometimes. I'm happy to say we're still close friends outside of our student-professor relationship now. We laugh about it and remind each other it was never real, just a fun twist in the academic journey for both of us.
