Learning to Balance
Anonymous Naughty Duckling #495 · General Confessions
Hey there! I'm going to share a really personal story with you all. So, here goes nothing... I’m 23 and have been exploring my dynamic with a partner who’s also in his early twenties for about two years now. We’ve always had an open relationship where we discuss our desires honestly and respectfully. It’s important to us that everything is consensual, but we also try to keep things exciting. About six months ago, I started feeling the urge to occasionally switch roles. When I’m in my little space, it feels really comforting to be cared for and protected. But when I’m in caregiver mode, there’s a part of me that loves being in control and looking after him with all sorts of care. The tricky thing is that sometimes I want both at once or switch back and forth frequently. It got to the point where we had a really heated discussion about whether this was too much for our dynamic. He’s worried it’ll become confusing, but I feel like my needs are valid and deserve addressing. We ended up agreeing to take a break from roleplaying for a while just to understand each other better. I’m really happy that we can communicate so openly, yet also nervous about where this goes. Is it normal to want both sides of the coin sometimes? Should I push back into a consistent role or try and embrace my flexibility? Would love any advice on how to navigate these waters! Am I the asshole for not being satisfied with one side?
