Lonely Nights in the Home Office

Anonymous Blushing Kitten #809 · General Confessions

I work from home as a freelancer, and my office has become a sanctuary and a prison at once. Lately, I’ve found myself sliding into a dynamic with someone who looks up to me in ways that feel both natural and uncomfortable. She calls me Daddy, though she’s never known anything else but this arrangement we’ve grown into together since her early twenties when she was struggling with life's challenges. In those moments, I step into the role of a protective father figure and mentor, guiding her through tough times with a mix of stern guidance and gentle care. But here's where it gets complicated: even though we started this arrangement when she needed support in ways that don't involve her youth or childhood, I can’t shake the loneliness. The room fills with silence more often than with laughter or conversation. I wonder if there’s something missing from our connection, if the dynamic has become too one-sided, or if it's just me projecting my own anxieties onto this setup. I’m reaching out to ask others who have experienced similar dynamics: is what we’re doing unusual? Am I failing in my role as a guide and father figure because of how lonely our interactions seem to be at times? What could help us find balance and warmth beyond the surface-level guidance?
