I Broke a Little Rule and Had a Big Meltdown Over It
Anonymous Cuddly Plum #535 · General Confessions
So, this is going to sound ridiculous because let me be clear, I'm in my thirties, been living an independent life as a Daddy for over a decade now. My relationship with Jamie started when she was just figuring out who she was and what kind of dynamic she wanted in her life. We've built something beautiful together that's far from traditional or conventional but suits us perfectly. Now, here’s the embarrassing part: we have this rule where I'm supposed to text her by a certain time every night before bed to check in and make sure she’s settled down for the night. It's one of those little rituals that makes our bond feel even stronger. But last week, on a particularly tiring day at work, I forgot about it. Not because I was irresponsible or didn't care, it just slipped my mind amidst everything else. When Jamie woke up and saw no message from me, she felt this pang of worry and reached out to ask where I was. Of course, the guilt hit me like a ton of bricks when she called and asked why I hadn’t messaged her as usual. She wasn't upset at all really, just confused and slightly concerned, which made sense given our agreement. But then my brain just went into overdrive. Here we are with this adult relationship where everything is consent-based and negotiated, yet suddenly I felt like a kid getting scolded for breaking curfew. I ended up sending her an apology that probably sounded overly dramatic even to me, detailing how sorry I was for the oversight and promising it would never happen again. We talked about it, of course, I explained my mistake wasn't out of negligence but just forgetfulness from a tough day. She responded with grace and understanding as always. But you know what really drove home this whole experience for me? The fact that I overreacted so much to something that in the grand scheme of things was tiny, like one of those times when you accidentally step on your partner's favorite toy while they're not around. It’s just a reminder that even in mature, consensual relationships, little rules can carry a lot of emotional weight. I guess the lesson here is simple: keep checking my phone for reminders because feeling like an irresponsible Dad isn't fun at all, even when it's clear she was never mad to begin with.
