Lonely Afternoons

Anonymous Whispering Cupcake #301 · General Confessions

I've been working from home as a freelancer for about six months now. At first, I loved having control over my schedule and being able to manage my own workload. But lately, the solitude is getting to me more than I thought it would. Today was just one of those days where everything felt off, I couldn't focus on any project or task. So I did something I've never done before: I put a call out online for someone to be there with me during my workday. Not as an assistant, but just company. Someone who understood the quiet emptiness that can fill up a room when you're by yourself all day. She showed up right around lunchtime and we had a quick meal together before settling in with laptops open on opposite sides of my small living space. The arrangement was strictly platonic, or so I thought it would be. But as hours passed and the conversation faded into comfortable silences, I found myself drawn to her presence in ways that felt unexpected, yet oddly familiar. There were moments when holding her hand felt like a lifeline against the loneliness, touching base with reality through the simple act of human connection. I left work early today, deciding it was best not to explore those feelings further right now. She seemed understanding and didn't push for anything more than friendship. Yet as I sit here alone again tonight, there's this lingering sense that maybe one day soon, I won’t be so quick to let go of the warmth she brought.
