Confused About My New Obsession

Anonymous Cuddly Doll #462 · General Confessions

I've been a barista at this coffee shop for about six months now. I started out just trying to make ends meet and ended up really enjoying the people, the pace, and even the job itself. Recently, though, something strange has happened, my fascination with one of our regular customers, whom I'll call Alex, has turned into a bit more than friendly chatter. Alex comes in almost every morning around 8:30 AM to order his usual latte and spend an hour or so working on his laptop. We've chatted plenty over the months about everything from local politics to our shared love of indie music. As time went by, I found myself looking forward to seeing him more than just another customer. It started when he left a really nice tip one morning after we had a particularly long conversation about travel and adventure. It wasn't unusual for people to leave big tips, but this felt different, almost as if it was meant to mean something more. Since then, I've caught myself daydreaming during my shifts, imagining what would happen if things between us were... closer. That's when it started getting weird. During a busy Saturday morning last month, there were delays and long lines of grumpy customers. But Alex waited patiently for his order as usual, sipping at the latte he'd gotten from me while I was working on another order. We had a brief conversation then too, about how stressful mornings can be. Later that day, it felt like everything shifted, something about how we interacted after seemed... different. He made small talk in a way that wasn't just casual anymore, as if he wanted to know more personal details than the weather and weekend plans. There was this underlying current between us that I couldn’t ignore. Now, every time Alex comes into the coffee shop, I get nervous and excited all at once. It’s like there's an unspoken understanding that goes beyond regular customer service, a shared interest in something more meaningful than just buying a cup of coffee. But this isn't normal, is it? I haven’t brought it up because I don't want to ruin our dynamic, but it feels increasingly out of place. So here’s my question: Is there anything wrong with feeling like there's an unspoken connection with someone you interact with regularly in a professional capacity? Should I just let this go and continue to see Alex as a customer without any romantic implications, or is it okay to explore something more if the vibe feels right between us? I appreciate your thoughts on this.
