The Day I Broke Mom's Rule About Cookies
Anonymous Whispering Marshmallow #971 · General Confessions
I’m in my late 20s and have been playing a little/kid role with my partner, who’s always the caregiver. It’s this safe space where we can talk openly about things that are often hidden or misunderstood. But recently, something small has been gnawing at me. You see, Mom (as I call her in our play) has a rule, no snacking on cookies after dinner without asking. Cookies were my childhood weakness and now it’s part of the dynamic with my partner too. She loves to bake them for us but they’re also her little disciplinary tool. So last week, we had these amazing chocolate chip cookies she made. They looked so delicious right there in the jar on the counter after dinner one night. I really wanted just one. But you know the rule, ask permission first or else you face the consequences which usually include a little timeout (but no real punishment). So I told myself, “It’s okay, just this once, I’ll confess later.” I took one and savored it in secret, but that night I couldn’t sleep. The guilt was eating away at me. Did breaking such a small rule really matter? It felt like a betrayal of our little space rules and the trust we’ve built up. This morning, I finally confessed to my partner about what happened. Her response surprised me, she said it’s alright but I need to earn back that trust through extra chores and more mindful self-discipline. It might seem silly from an outsider’s perspective, but for us, these rules aren’t just about food or discipline. They’re about respecting each other in a deep way that transcends age roles. So yes, one cookie feels like a big deal to me now.
