A Caregiver's Dilemma...
Anonymous Peachy Cub #294 · General Confessions
I've been taking care of my partner for the past year... Ever since she was in a terrible car accident and her life changed forever. I didn't hesitate to be there for her, to help with everything from basic needs to emotional support.... It feels strange though, sometimes when we're just lying in bed or doing something simple together, like watching TV, it's as if I'm not her partner but rather someone who looks after her, almost like a parent taking care of their child. This dynamic isn't imposed on me; it's what she needs and wants from our relationship.... It started small... little things, like tucking her in bed or bringing her soup when she feels ill. Now, these acts are more frequent and feel increasingly intimate beyond just the physical care.... But every time I slip into that caregiver role, a part of me can't help but wonder if this is what it's supposed to be. Is it normal for one partner to act as the primary caregiver while the other relies on them for daily tasks? Sometimes it feels like too much... Like maybe there should be more balance or less dependency.... I'm not sure how to proceed without feeling guilty or worrying about pushing her away when she needs me so much. Am I being selfish for questioning this? Is it okay for both of us to seek a healthier, more equal dynamic if that's what we want?... Your advice would mean a lot to me...
