Little Space in Unexpected Places
Anonymous Candy Bean #664 · General Confessions
I was recently divorced and feeling pretty lost after all that. My ex-wife had always been strict about adult stuff only, but now I felt like everything was off-limits. One night, I decided to visit a friend's place for some comfort food and Netflix. Long story short, my friend has this little corner in his living room that he set up as a little space, complete with furniture and stuffed animals lining the walls. I'll be honest, I felt like an idiot even considering it. But there was something about the setup that made me feel safe, like I could take off the weight of being a responsible adult for a bit. So, after some hesitation, I curled up in that little space and pretended to be eight years old again. I didn’t go all out or anything, just played with the toys and watched cartoons, stuff I hadn't done since childhood. It felt incredibly liberating yet a tad embarrassing. I was worried my friend might notice something strange about me, but he's pretty chill and seemed more interested in discussing his latest streaming obsessions. But then, things got really unexpected. My friend had this weird fascination with adulting and little space, like he was into it himself or something. So one night, he suggested we play a game where I act like a kid again for a bit. It felt so surreal but also exhilarating to let go of all the stress and just be silly for once. And you know what? That night, my friend and I ended up having one of those deep conversations about adulthood versus childhood fantasies, the kind that usually only happens when you've had too much wine at a dinner party. But this felt different. We both admitted our desires to escape the pressures of adult life for just an hour or two. I'll admit, it's still weird to think about now, but I'm grateful for that experience. It was a reminder that there are places where you can be whoever you want, even if it means being someone from another time in your life.
