Broke My Diet at Work
Anonymous Cherry Bean #381 · General Confessions
This week has been a real drag. I've been stuck in my office all day, every day, and it's starting to wear on me. Normally, I love the quiet work environment where I can just zone out with my projects and pretend everything outside my little world doesn't exist. But today was different. Today, something small made me break under pressure. I've been trying hard to get back into a fitness routine after being too lazy over the winter. Part of this includes dieting, cutting out all the snacks and junk food I normally indulge in during my boring workdays. It's not easy though; every time I see those vending machines or hear that chocolate cake someone brought in, it makes me want to scream. Today was no different. A new colleague from accounting had come into our office with a huge box of assorted chocolates and sweets, saying she hoped everyone enjoyed them as much as she did. She even left several on my desk while I was out for lunch, little chocolate truffles that looked absolutely divine. I told myself I'd wait until after work to have one or two but... well, you know how it goes. As soon as the clock hit 3 PM and no one else seemed to be around, I caved. I sat there with a small bag of mixed candies in my hand, staring at them longingly before finally giving in and popping one into my mouth. The burst of sugar was exhilarating yet terrifying, what if someone came back and found me eating these forbidden treats? Would they think less of me? I ended up having a few more throughout the afternoon, trying to enjoy each moment as it passed because I knew I'd regret this later. When my boss walked by around 5 PM with an approving nod for finishing that report she wanted done yesterday (thanks to those sugar boosts), my guilt hit hard. Later in the evening after work, lying down on my couch, I couldn't shake off how guilty and disappointed I felt. It's not about cheating on a diet, it's more about failing this adult challenge I set myself up for and then gave into temptation because I was tired of feeling bored and powerless against it. I suppose the confession here is that even when you're trying to do right by yourself, little moments can make you feel like a child again who just couldn't resist those yummy treats. And maybe there's something in that; if being an adult means learning how to handle these kinds of situations without giving up entirely, then I haven't quite got the hang of it yet.
