My Struggle as a Caregiver

Anonymous Secret Duckling #199 · General Confessions

I've been with my partner for over three years now. She's in her mid-thirties and has some health issues that require constant care, which I take on gladly as her caregiver. We never labeled our dynamic formally like 'Daddy' or anything; it just happened naturally out of love and the need she had. The thing is, over time, I've started to feel a bit suffocated by my role. It's not that I don't care for her deeply - I do. But the weight of being responsible 24/7 has been taking its toll on me. I haven't spoken about it much because I'm scared of how she might react or what she'll think of me if I admit these feelings. Lately, though, things have become harder to manage. She's started asking for more attention and care than ever before, and while part of that is her condition worsening, another part feels like a desire to be treated as more fragile and in need. It's not that she isn't - there are days when I feel so overwhelmed with worry about her health that the stress turns into this deep-seated sadness. I know my partner deserves all the care and support I can give her, but it feels like there's a limit to how much of myself I can pour out without running dry. I've been trying to find ways to share more responsibilities or bring in help from others, but she's resistant to any changes that might upset our routine. How do you keep your heart open while caring for someone who needs so much? It's such a tightrope between loving them and needing to take care of yourself too. I worry I'll end up resenting her one day if this continues, which terrifies me because all I want is to be there for her no matter what.
