...A Caregiver's Dilemma...

Anonymous Sugar Duckling #327 · General Confessions

I've been working at the same retail store for over five years now. I started as a cashier and slowly worked my way up to the management position. I'm in my late twenties, with an understanding wife who knows about my workaholic tendencies and also my unique relationship dynamic outside of it. She's cool with everything we do together... just as long as she gets her time too. A few months back, a new employee joined our team, a young woman named Lily. I immediately noticed something different about her. There was this aura around her that screamed 'care' and dependency... not in a creepy way, but more like someone who genuinely wanted guidance and support from an older figure. We hit it off pretty quickly. I could tell she looked up to me, often seeking advice on everything from store procedures to personal matters. Over time, I found myself increasingly drawn into her life, beyond the typical work relationship. It started small, offering extra support, listening to her issues... but eventually escalated. We began meeting outside of work, and it wasn't long before we were in a deeply supportive roleplay dynamic... not just about retail problems, but about being there for each other on all fronts. I never gave myself the 'Daddy' label or anything formal like that... it was more about us finding our own boundaries and comfort levels. I acted as her mentor and confidant, and she responded with a level of trust and reliance that felt incredibly rewarding but also somewhat daunting at times... One day, after several weeks of deepening this dynamic, Lily admitted to feeling like I was the only one who truly understood her needs. She had a rough upbringing... some things were hard for her to talk about until she trusted me enough to do so. It made me feel both honored and a bit overwhelmed... but ultimately fulfilled in my ability to provide the support she needed. Looking back, it's clear I was using this roleplay as an escape from my mundane life and relationship at home. But despite everything, Lily genuinely felt better about herself with our interactions, and that made me feel like what we had was meaningful... even if it wasn't exactly healthy or conventional... I know there are aspects of this dynamic that aren't perfect, and maybe crossing professional lines isn't the best idea... but for now, I'm choosing to see it as an unconventional form of helping someone find their path in life. And honestly? It's been one of the most rewarding experiences of my adult life... So yeah... this is where I am with Lily. Conflicted and proud all at once...
