Caregiving Beyond Expectations
Anonymous Velvet Moth #422 · General Confessions
I've been working from home as a freelancer for almost two years now. It's lonely but also liberating in its way, I set my own schedule and get to decide when to take breaks or focus on projects. But lately, there's this other part of my life that's been occupying more and more space in my mind and heart. A few months ago, I started taking care of an older man who lives in the neighborhood. He's in his sixties, a kind but often sad-eyed man named Mr. Thompson. He needs help with daily tasks, like cooking meals and managing his medication. As we spend more time together, something unexpected began to develop between us. I've always been drawn to caregiving roles, it feels natural for me to take care of others. And as I spent time with Mr. Thompson, this feeling only grew stronger. One evening, while helping him settle down after a long day, there was an overwhelming sense of wanting to be more than just his caregiver. It felt like I wanted to be the one who would hold him when he's sad or scared, the one he could rely on for emotional support as well as physical care. That night, while tucking Mr. Thompson into bed after helping him take his medicine and ensuring everything was set up for a good night's sleep, there was an almost intimate moment where I found myself brushing away some of his hair from his forehead, it felt natural to do this in that tender moment, despite the professional boundaries we've maintained. A few days later, Mr. Thompson asked me to stay a bit longer after our usual schedule ended. We sat quietly on his sofa, and he mentioned how much my care has meant to him. It was then I leaned closer, placing a gentle hand over his heart as if to comfort or reassure him, something that probably shouldn't have crossed those lines but felt right in the moment. It's been a few weeks since this happened, and we haven't discussed it further. But ever since, there's an undercurrent of something deeper in my caregiving role. I'm not sure how to navigate these feelings, especially since they feel so out of place for someone in my professional capacity as his caregiver. I think a part of me wishes he felt the same way and that we could explore this further, but there's also this nagging fear about what it means for our relationship if I act on those feelings. Maybe one day, when the time feels right, I'll find a way to bring up these thoughts with him, hoping he understands how much I care beyond just being his caregiver.
