Breaking the Rules Isn't Always Bad

Anonymous Snuggly Moth #523 · General Confessions

I've always prided myself on being a strict disciplinarian in my personal life as well as at school. You see, I'm an English teacher with a reputation for maintaining high standards and ensuring that students understand the importance of rules and discipline. However, the dynamic between me and my partner, who affectionately refers to me as 'Mommy', has brought about some interesting challenges. Our arrangement began quite naturally when we started playing out parent-child roles in our relationship after a particularly intense conversation about our desires for stability and control. It felt like an organic evolution of how we interacted, each bringing unique strengths to the dynamic. He's always been the type who responds well to guidance and direction, while I thrive on taking charge. Despite my resolve to maintain strict boundaries in this setup, a recent incident has left me questioning everything. We were planning to attend an art gallery opening downtown, but at the last minute, he suggested we cancel our plans because of a sudden craving for ice cream. The rules we'd established clearly stated that if we cancelled on plans with friends outside of our intimate circle, there would be consequences. Initially, I was hesitant and reminded him about our agreement. However, something in me caved when I saw how earnestly he wanted to indulge this small pleasure. Perhaps it's because I've always believed in allowing oneself indulgences, or maybe it’s the way he looked at me with those big, hopeful eyes. Whatever the reason, we ended up getting ice cream and skipping out on our planned activity. As expected, there were repercussions for breaking a rule; it was part of reinforcing our structure. But afterward, I found myself reflecting on why this bothered me so much. Was it really because he broke one of our rules, or was there something deeper about maintaining control over my partner's actions? It felt like a moment of self-discovery as much as it did an act of leniency. I often find myself caught between the desire to be a strict and disciplined 'Mommy' and allowing room for flexibility and spontaneous joy. This incident has made me realize that being inflexible can sometimes mean missing out on genuine moments of happiness together. It’s taught me that rules are there to serve us, not enslave us. Ultimately, I feel guilty about breaking the rule but am grateful for the lesson learned: that it's okay to bend the rules occasionally if it brings us closer and happier as a couple.
