My Secret with Mr. Smith
Anonymous Whispering Fawn #443 · General Confessions
So here's the thing, I've been working from home as a freelancer for almost three years now and it has its ups and downs. You know, juggling deadlines while managing my two-year-old? It’s pretty tough sometimes. But there's this guy at work, let me call him Mr. Smith for anonymity. We interact mostly through Slack and emails, but occasionally we have calls where he asks about how I’m doing and what I need from his end. The thing is, ever since the pandemic started, our conversations began to get a bit more personal. Mr. Smith knows all about my work-life balance struggles and one day, out of nowhere, he asked if everything was alright at home. It felt odd because we don’t normally talk like that. But then again, we spend hours on calls discussing client needs or project timelines. We’re always talking business but somehow, this personal question made me feel... different. Fast forward to last month when my workload became overwhelming and I was feeling really stressed. That's when Mr. Smith sent an email offering some advice for managing stress, things like meditation apps and taking breaks throughout the day. It wasn’t just work-related anymore; it felt like he genuinely cared about me as a person, not just as a colleague or client. This blew my mind because I was so used to seeing him only in our professional context. Then one afternoon, while we were on an important call regarding a tight deadline, Mr. Smith suddenly asked if I needed any help with anything, like actual real-life help. At first, I thought maybe he misunderstood something or was just being nice because the task at hand seemed impossible to handle alone. But then after hanging up, I kept thinking about how much it meant that someone saw me struggling and wanted to support me beyond our work relationship. So now here we are: I have these feelings for Mr. Smith that go way beyond professional boundaries, but I don't know what to do with them. On one hand, it feels good to be seen and heard by him in a meaningful way. But on the other hand, acting on these feelings could jeopardize our working relationship, which is important both financially and creatively for me right now. I guess my confession here isn’t so much about what happened but more about how I'm feeling stuck between wanting to maintain professionalism while also acknowledging there might be a mutual connection worth exploring. It's like walking a tightrope every day until something shifts, either in our dynamic or my perspective on it.
