Caregiving in College Isn't Easy
Anonymous Peachy Plum #382 · General Confessions
So I started this little experiment of being a caregiver to someone who needs... let's call it support. Not because they're incapable or anything, but more like a personal challenge for both of us. We never gave each other titles or labels, just agreed on the arrangement as adults. It's funny how people have such different takes on what 'caregiving' looks like. For me, it means cooking and cleaning, setting boundaries, giving advice when needed... you know, typical grown-up stuff. Anyway, it started off well enough. I'm in my mid-twenties, so there’s that age gap, just a few years separating us, but old enough to feel like an adult here. But the kicker is they wanted this thing where sometimes, when things aren't going their way, or they're just having one of those days, I get to step into more of a disciplinarian role. It's not harsh by any means, more like setting stricter rules and enforcing them without much leeway for excuses. The other day, there was this whole thing about cleaning the apartment. We both agreed it would be done right after breakfast on Saturdays. They were late last week, then skipped this past Saturday. So, I put my foot down, made a list of chores, and gave them until Sunday to get it all done. If not? More consequences next time. I know it sounds a bit silly or extreme when you write it out like that, but let's be real, everyone needs structure sometimes, right? Plus, there’s always this tension in the air; they're supposed to respect me as an adult, and I have to remember not to treat them like one. It's complicated. Anyway, I guess what I'm trying to confess is that it works for us, but it also feels a bit out of place sometimes. Like, here I am, juggling college classes, part-time work, and suddenly this adult-to-adult caregiving setup. Sounds like something from a TV show or book, doesn't it? But honestly? It's pretty cool too. Gave me perspective on what 'adulting' really means beyond just the basics.
