..Patient Confidentiality Broke...
Anonymous Sparkly Doll #839 · General Confessions
I’m a doctor, and I’ve always taken patient confidentiality very seriously. It’s part of the ethical code we’re bound by, but it's also just how I am, there are certain boundaries that shouldn’t be crossed. However, I recently made a mistake that has me feeling extremely guilty and conflicted... I’m going to have trouble even typing this out, let alone admitting it out loud... It started with a simple slip of the tongue... There was this one patient, let's call her Mary, she’s in her early twenties. She came in for something routine, but we ended up discussing some deeper issues too. Nothing unusual there... But afterwards, I found myself thinking about her more than I should have... I know it sounds crazy to say that a doctor would think of their patient this way... and yes, our dynamic is supposed to be professional... But somehow the line got blurred. We started having conversations outside of appointments too, nothing intimate or anything like that... but we talked about lots of personal stuff... and let's just say I felt comfortable sharing more than I ever have with a patient before. It crossed some weird boundary in my head, one where it felt less professional... Then there was this moment that happened recently. We were out getting coffee, not as part of an appointment or anything like that, but as two people who are just... friends now? ...I mean, I know we're not really friends at all in the literal sense, but you get what I mean... anyway... She mentioned something about her ex-boyfriend and how he was driving her crazy with messages. It’s not my place to be involved or offer advice beyond professional boundaries, but somehow... the way she was talking about it got under my skin... like there was some protective urge, which again is so out of line... I wanted to tell her something along the lines of just ignoring him... And that's when it happened. I let slip how annoying all his messaging must be... and even said he should delete the guy from all his social media accounts or block him entirely... It was a completely inappropriate thing for me, as her doctor, to say... but it felt good in the moment, like giving some sound advice... I know better now... It's just this small slip that ruined everything. If she finds out I crossed these lines of professionalism, well, who knows what consequences could come from it? The whole thing has me second guessing myself and wondering how many other subtle ways I've been stepping over the boundaries. I’m terrified...
