Small Slips in Discipline
Anonymous Secret Plum #281 · General Confessions
I've been married for over twenty years now, and it's safe to say we've navigated our fair share of ups and downs. Recently, I've started exploring a dynamic with my husband where he takes on the role of my disciplinarian. It's new territory for both of us, but it has brought a fresh layer of emotional intimacy into our relationship. We set some rules for ourselves to help maintain this new structure, one being that I would refrain from reaching out to him during the day unless there was an emergency or we had prearranged something specific. Yesterday, while feeling particularly anxious about work, I found myself slipping and sending a text to my husband at lunchtime. It's not like it was anything urgent or even substantial; just some fleeting thoughts swirling around in my head that needed grounding. I knew right away after hitting send how out of line it was, and when he messaged back, there was an unmistakable edge to his tone as a reminder that breaking the rules had consequences. Feeling guilty and wanting to make amends, we talked about it later at home. He expressed disappointment but also reminded me why these boundaries are in place, for my benefit and our relationship's health. It struck a chord with me, realizing how even the smallest missteps can undermine something positive if left unchecked.
