A Midlife Discovery
Anonymous Dreamy Marshmallow #371 · General Confessions
I’ve been teaching for over thirty years now. Most people would say I’m an old soul in a young body, but lately, it feels like the roles are reversed; my body has aged beyond what my mind is ready to accept. Last year was particularly tough, I lost both of my parents within six months of each other. It’s not that they weren’t prepared for death, they’d had serious illnesses, and it just happened as expected. But still, I felt like the rug was pulled out from under me, leaving a void so large, nothing could fill it. My marriage wasn’t immune to this sudden change either; after years of stability, we found ourselves drifting further apart with every passing day. We tried therapy but in the end, we both agreed that our love had simply run its course and it was time for us to part ways amicably. I moved into a small apartment, hoping it would be a fresh start. Instead, I found myself constantly surrounded by reminders of my past, photographs, books from my children’s childhood, remnants of a life that seemed so distant now. During this period of introspection and solitude, an old friend suggested I explore the world beyond academia to find new outlets for creativity and fulfillment. It was at one such event, a gathering of sorts, that I met Sarah. She’s in her twenties, bright-eyed, and full of youthful energy. She listened intently as I shared stories from my life, offering perspectives that felt both fresh and insightful. As our conversations deepened, we found an unexpected connection over a mutual interest in role-playing scenarios, which she had been exploring with other adults. It was something completely foreign to me but oddly fascinating. I agreed to meet her one evening for coffee and found myself intrigued by the playful dynamic between us once more familiar academic discussions were set aside. There was an ease about her that made it easy to open up about my fears, frustrations, and desires. The conversation drifted towards a scenario where I found myself as the learner, perhaps seeking guidance or wisdom, from someone like Sarah, who embodies life’s vibrancy. That night, we ventured into a playful exploration of these ideas in an adult context. It felt freeing, exhilarating, yet also strange to be on this unfamiliar terrain without the usual framework of age and experience dictating our interaction. The world outside had closed its doors, but within this intimate space, possibilities seemed endless. I’m still grappling with how to proceed, this is all so new and uncharted for me, but I felt it necessary to share my journey thus far in case anyone else finds themselves at a crossroads like mine.
